Vitamins
When I was a little girl I used to push my vitamins through cracks in our playhouse. The playhouse was a two story structure in our small suburban backyard built by my mother and father. It was wooden and there was just enough room in between the floor boards to rid yourself of a baby carrot, so I knew that my vitamins could fit with ease. I think
I knew that the carrots and the vitamins were part of a well-balanced diet, but time and again I can remember requesting to finish my dinner outside – to take my vegetables with me. My mom tells me that one day she found a host of colored vitamins behind our T.V. and started making me finish my meals at the table.
I wish I could say this was a lesson learned. Vitamins and carrots are an important part of a healthy diet. But I didn't ’t want any part of it. I seem to have this nasty habit of running from the things that are meant to help me and chasing after solutions that provide mere temporary happiness.
Even now as a teacher I can't seem to take the message I share with others and follow through in my own life. On Monday I met with a small group I lead of local high school students. We discussed spending time with the Lord I took the chance to challenge them in their priorities. I myself can let sleep take priority over almost anything: breakfast, a shower, making coffee, exercising... and even time with the Lord. All of these seem to go out the window when I'm tired, especially when it's cold outside! I tried to convey the importance of prioritizing a deep relationship with God and quality time spent in the Word. Like the rebounding of a basketball, we should grab onto that time and fight for it against all odds.
I hit the snooze button for 45 minutes this morning. No breakfast, no coffee, no shower... no vitamins.

As we enter deeper into the story of Adam and Eve, it challenges me to remember that one minute we can be living in paradise and the next find ourselves in the middle of spiritual battle. Intimacy with the Lord is the absolute foundation to being able to resist temptation. We have the promise that Jesus knows our weaknesses and that the power of the Holy Spirit resides within us. Take comfort from that fact. I know I do.
See you this weekend for part #2 of "In the Beginning." - Ginger
